İzmir deniz boyunca gelişmiş bir şehir. Dolayısıyla İzmir kültürü de kıyı çizgisi etrafında şekilleniyor. Liman-Kordon aksı, kıyı çizgisinin her bir adımda değişerek farklı mekanlar ve yaşam biçimleri oluşturduğu özgün bir örnek. Proje alanı olarak seçilen otopark alanı şehirde önemli bir konumda bulunuyor. Otopark, suya erişimin şehre açıldığı noktayı işaretler nitelikte. İzmir, insanların deniz ile doğrudan erişiminin olduğu kilometrelerce uzunlukta bir kıyı çizgisine sahip. Bu kamusal çizgi kuzeyde limana gelindiğinde kesiliyor ve denize erişim kısıtlanıyor. Alanın bu geçirimsiz yapısı Alsancak boyunca heterojen bir yapı oluşturmakta. Proje alanının bu kendine has karakteri tasarımı doğrudan etkileyen bir unsur. 

Izmir is a city developed around the sea. Therefore its culture revolves around shore-life. Liman-Kordon axis is a motley epitome of Izmir where a continuous shoreline deviates through the city to create various places and lifestyles. The idle carpark chosen as the project site is a crucial location in Izmir. It is the benchmark of access to water. Izmir has an accessible shoreline where people can touch the sea for kilometers long until the port, where shoreline becomes private. 

Manipulating the Shoreline

Proje alanının karakteristiği ile birlikte tasarımı etkileyen bir diğer unsur ise ‘müze nedir?’ sorusu. Müze çoğu zaman -ve oldukça isabetli bir şekilde- bir bilgi edinme merkezi olarak görülür, İnsan, müzeden gerekli veya gereksiz bir sürü bilgi toplar. Ancak günümüzde bilgiye erişim elimizdeki telefondan, önümüzdeki bilgisayardan sağlanabiliyorken neden yalnızca bilgi edinmek için müze ziyaret etme ihtiyacı hissedelim? Bu nedenle müze, benim için bir yolculuk halinde olmaktır. Yakın tarihte hiçbir teknolojik gelişmenin alternatifini sunamayacağı bir yolculuk. 

This non-permeability generates a heterogeneous structure around Alsancak. This character of the site is something that should directly reflect on the design. After analyzing the site, the second aspect that would define the course of this project would be the question, what is a museum? My understanding of a museum is a being on a journey. One gathers a bunch of information at a museum, whether it is necessary or not. However, nowadays you can see the pictures on your phone, so why visit a museum if your sole purpose is gaining information? 

Fake Museum

Bu nedenle yeni bir müze manifestosu yazılmalı ve müze konsepti aşağıdaki kurallara göre değişmelidir. 

Müze,

• Hareketli, dinamik olmalı.
• Yeni deneyimler önermeli.
• Varlığı ile ziyaretçi çekebilmeli, yalnızca sergilenen eserler ile değil. 
• Esnek ve aynı zamanda fonksiyonel olmalı.
• Genişleyebilmeli. 
• Zaman içinde aynı ziyaretçiye farklı hissettirmeli 
• Kamuya açık olmalı.
• Şehrin ikonu olmalı. 

Therefore a new museum, manifestation should be produced and the museum concept must change according to the following rules: 

A museum,

• must be moving/ dynamic.
• must offer new experiences.
• must attract visitors by its existence, not thanks to what is being exhibited.
• can be flexible but at the same time must be functional.
• must have room to expand.
• must feel different for the same visitor over time.
• must be open to the public.
• and most importantly must be the icon of the city.

Museum Catalogue

Bu kuralları belirledikten sonra İzmir’de şehrin yeni ikonu olacak bir kıyı kültürü ve kent müzesi tasarladım. Eklektik, mekansallık ile farklı deneyimler oluşturmayı hedefleyen yeni bir müze. Kıyının ucundaki otopark alanında bulunmasının yanı sıra müze Alsancak limanını değiştiren, kamusallaştıran ve yeniden canlandıran bir tasarım. Bu sayede müze tüm bölgenin kentsel kimliğini yeniden oluşturuyor. Tasarım teknoloji, doku,ve renk ile mekansal deneyler sunarken fonksiyonellikten ödün vermiyor. Renk, doku ve form olarak değişiklik gösteren hacimler sergi alanlarını oluşturuyor. 

After defining all these rules, I designed a new museum, in fact, the new museum that is the icon of Izmir. An eclectic, experimental coastal museum in that investigates the possibilities of experience through spatiality. Along with being located on an idle carpark site in Alsancak, the new museum alters, publicizes and revives Alsancak port, therefore changes the urban character of the whole area. Additionally, the design plays with technology, textures, and colors without compensating from functionality. 3D printed volumes varying in color and texture form the exhibition areas of the museum. 

New Pier

Müze, önceden proje alanında bulunan otoparkın küçük bir kısmına yerleşiyor. Bu sayede bu alan kamuya açılıyor ve İzmir’in tipolojik kıyı boyunca yerleşen kamusal meydanlarından biri haline geliyor. Proje alanında bulunan iki yapı ise restore edilerek müzenin bir parçası haline geliyor. Müze mağazası olarak formüle edilen bu yapı müzenin sağ kanadı ve kıyıya doğru uzanan iskele kısmı ile farklı kotlarda bağlanmış. Müzenin farklı girişleri bulunuyor. Yeni yapı, sırtını İzmir’in ikonik -eskiden brutalist şimdi eklenen metal paneller ile kimliksiz- otoparkına dönüyor. Müze, bu otoparka önerilen iki köprü/tünel ile bağlanıyor ve müze mevcut altyapıyı bünyesine katmış oluyor. Ziyaretçiler otoparkın 5 ve 7. katlarından müzeye giriş yapabiliyor. 

New Museum does not cover a lot of ground on the idle carpark, which was occupying this space before. This space is opened up to the public to be used as a public plaza. Also, the existing building is renovated and used as the museum shop. the right-wing of the museum and the pier is connected to this building on upper levels. it also has a separate street-level entrance. The building turns its back to the existing brutalist carpark building. There are two tunnels designed that go into the carpark building. Visitors can enter the building from the carpark’s 5th and 7th floors. 

New Experiences

Eskiden cruise gemilerinin bağlandığı ancak günümüzde kullanılmayan dolgu liman alanı kaldırılarak kıyı çizgisi yeniden çizilmiş. Böylece Kordon ile deniz ilişkisi tamamen değiştiriliyor. Müzeden çıkan kapsüller denize doğru uzayarak yaratılan yeni limanda kamusal alanlar oluşturuyor. İskele, parçalı karakteri sayesinde müzeden çıkan yeni kapsüllerin eklenmesine/çıkarılmasına olanak veriyor.

The impractical filled cruiser port is removed and the shoreline is re-shaped. by doing this, the museum has its port, which changes the relationship between Kordon and the sea completely. Capsules of the museum expand towards the sea to create recreational public spaces thanks to the fragmented character of the pier which enables additions/removals. 

Plans

Müzenin pek çok girişi bulunsa da ana giriş önerilen kamusal meydandan sağlanmakta. Ancak iç/dış mekan ayrımı yalnızca zemin katta bir katman camdan oluşuyor. Müze ışığa ve diğer çevresel faktörlere doğrudan geçirgen bir kabuğa sahip. Kapsül adı verilen farklı 3 boyutlu hacimler ve asma katlar ana sergi alanlarını oluştururken müze çoğu kısımda 6 metrelik tavan yüksekliklerine sahip. 

Although the museum has many entrances, the main entrance is located directly in front of the proposed urban plaza. However, the separation of inside and outside is just a layer of glass on the ground floor. The museum is impermeable to light and other outside factors. 3D printed capsules and mezzanine floors are the main exhibition areas. The physical nautical objects are exhibited on mezzanine floors, which have 6 meters ceiling height.
